Sonia Kiki Jones is a New Zealand visual artist who draws her inspiration from human stories creating bold three dimensional wall hung artworks.

Born in Auckland to European parents, I am a first generation New Zealander. My early childhood was spent crafting and sewing with my mum, and in the workshop and kitchen with my dad, while being dragged around demolition yards to find the treasures to restore the historic Cardrona Hotel, a relic from the 1860s gold rush era in Central Otago, that my parents had bought to restore in 1974. I share this, as I feel extremely privileged to have had such a unique childhood and feel it shaped so much of who I am, particularly the unique set of skills that I acquired, that now allows me to create my bold mixed media 3D wall hung artworks.
My early interest in fashion design, draping, wearable arts, along with my inspiration from the likes of Jim Dine, Anselm Kiefer and Robert Rausenberg, came through in my painting, and I ended up ditching the traditional flat surfaces. I started using actual clothing as my canvas, creating artworks that are a fusion of assemblage, painting and sculpture. Antlers, butterflies, rusted tools, vintage petticoats… My years in vintage stores were embedded in my soul.

A selection of artworks from State of [a] Dress, New York, 2017, as formerly Sonia Richter
These artworks captured the essence of the soul that inhabited the clothing, now I am looking deep inside, and asking the question, what happens when we shed that skin?
“All our experiences, past lives, friendships, wounds, loves and losses…all combine together inside of us to shape the uniqueness of who we are. In a world of constant distractions, and outer stimulations, it is so important we take the time to tap into the depths of our own soul, to be still enough to explore and discover the power and beauty that resides in each of us. I want my artwork on people’s walls to be a memento that everyday reminds them of that realization.”
My new body of work compares the human experience to that of a geode… discovering the wonder, light and strength that is deep inside of us when we open ourselves up. Discovering our unique attributes and individual gifts enabling each of us to see our power, strength and beauty.
I live in Wanaka, a stunning resort town in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. I have my studio and a permanent gallery in my home. So if you are down this way, come by for a visit. The espresso machine is always on and if it’s out of my gallery hours, I’m happy to make an alternative time to see you.
My home is now set up as an immersive art house rental called Kiki's, The Artist's House. When there are no guests I can show you around this too, and if you'd like to know more about the coolest new accommodation in Wanaka... check out here:
